The Boy Who Lived with Buffalo – the Buffalo Whisperer

He may be young, but 16-year-old Luke Michaelides has a wisdom and a sense of adventure that many people, old or young, do not have.  Luke has blogged a six part series “Hop, Skip and Jump” about his amazing and wonderful relationship with an African wild Buffalo in South Africa, called Hop.  At first, Luke and his family took in Hop when she was hurt, and then cared for Hop’s baby girl also, whom they called Skip.  Later, a male Buffalo joined the group for a while, and he was called Jump.

Luke’s heart-warming true story is about how he befriended Hop and Skip with patience, love and a connection to the truth that all of life is sacred.  The amazing love of nature and the wild in Luke and his friend, Carl-Daniel, are very apparent in their blog, “Young Nature Lovers”.  Luke claims that his friendship with Hop and Skip changed him and made him the person he is today.  No doubt this is true, in the sense that these wonderful Buffalo provided Luke with a challenge and an opportunity to either see them as mere beasts to be fed and left to their own companionships, or as magnificent awesome creatures whom were able to be-friend a human being and care for that person as that person cared for them.

But Luke was already the kind of person whom was and is open-minded to such relationships, and a person whom is courageous, patient, enduring and caring.  He was destined to meet Hop, Skip and Jump, as a pathway to learning that barriers between the “species” are mental concepts and not fixed or true at all.

So, I say thank you to Hop, Skip and Jump, and to Luke, and to Carl-Daniel, for your blog, which has truly inspired and encouraged me to continue seeing the sacred in all of Life.  The Buffalo Whisperer has demonstrated that the Buffalo is one of his Animal Totems.

“Those who have a Buffalo totem must walk a sacred path, honoring every walk of life. They will achieve nothing without the aid of the Great Spirit and must be humble enough to ask for assistance and then be grateful for those gifts. A Buffalo totem will seek to help the person establish a deep connection to Mother Earth and it will ask you to help the endangered species of our planet.  The Buffalo totem brings strength of character and an independent spirit. It is the totem of abundance.”
