Melbourne Cup – is it worth it?

Ex Race-horse in a “Kill box” at a Knackery

Horse racing like cricket is a time old tradition, enjoyed by many jockeys as a sport,  and relished by gamblers and owners etc. involved who make money and prestige from it.  But at what cost for these huge million dollar events as opposed to small for fun personal events involving NO PRIZE MONEY? Go in the Poll to have your opinion about horse racing in Australia.

This year Red Cadeaux  incurred a serious injury to his leg, and is now said to be okay.  Last year, 2 Melbourne Cup horses died.  Yes, the Jockeys and people involved may be devastated when their horse is injured or even dies, and may pull out all stops (no expense spared) to save a good race-horse, but what about those that don’t “cut the mustard”?

Not only horse racing but of course Grey-hound Racing, but this post is about HORSE RACING.

When a thoroughbred destined for racing is born in Australia, its chances of being a successful racehorse are slim. It is estimated that only 300 out of every 1,000 foals produced will ever start in a race. [1] That means of the 13,000 thoroughbred foals born each year in Australia alone, an approximate 9,000 will be considered useless and thousands will end up at “the doggers”.

You may think the horses that go to the abattoir will be used for dog food, so who cares, but I wait for the day when Homo sapiens will not treat Horses as commodities by up-scaling the sport of horse racing for profits, prestige, entertainment and sport.

It is estimated that 100,000 horses a year in America are sent to the slaughter house for horse meat, and ten percent are racehorses, as the video via the link below, showing a beautiful 4 year old race horse resccued from the “kill pen”,  reports.  Approximately 18000 racehorses are killed a year in Australia, for dog meat.  Please support the re-homing of Australian race horses via the   Australian Horse Welfare Society please.   Racehorses are NOT property.   They are living beings with souls.  Some like to race and some don’t.

While I don’t condone horse racing because it is an industry run for the profit and entertainment of human beings, at the cost of many horses being hurt in accidents, or discarded because they do not win; I do observe some of it and came across a beautiful pint sized 2 year old chestnut filly called “Miracles of Life” nick-named the Pocket Rocket.  She is from Australia and trained by Daniel Clarken of South Australia.  Her father (technically called her “sire”) was “Not a Single Doubt” and her mother (technically called her “dam”) was “Dazzling Gazelle”.

Miracles of Life is owned by Sri Lankan billionaire Mr Muzaffar Yaseen, who runs a major garment export business.  Teeley Assets’s  Iris O’Farrell is the “Bloodstock Manager” for Mr Yaseen, and recounts the chance that led to her becoming the racehorse buyer for Mr Yaseen.
